Experiencing world-class cuisine is one of the highlights of cruising. But if you have allergies, celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity, are vegan/vegetarian or have any other dietary restrictions the thought of eating away from home may feel overwhelming. Managing your dietary needs while cruising shouldn’t stop you from enjoying your vacation. Here we offer some advice and tips to ensure you have the best possible, worry-free experience.
The first step is to alert your travel agent of your dietary restrictions and needs. The agent will provide you with contact information for the cruise line, so you can get in touch and alert them of your requirements. Some cruise lines require 45 to 90 days notice, so the sooner you contact them the better. The cruise line will need time to prepare as they often have limited special ingredients on board. Some cruise lines, like Celebrity and Silversea, have trained their staff in the Dine Aware program so they have a good understanding of food allergies.
Once you’re on board, speak with the executive chef, dining or special needs manager to confirm that your requests are recorded. It is also a good idea to bring a printout of dietary restrictions to give to the dining staff. If you’ve requested a certain item, like gluten-free bread, ask how you will be able to access it at the buffet or at specialty restaurants. Be sure to also let the children’s activity coordinator know if your kids have any allergies or restrictions. Some cruise lines may allow you to pre-order meals. Ask to see tomorrow’s menu and discuss options and/or how the meals may be adapted. Many kitchens have a dedicated staff member to prepare special meals and with advance notice, they will be able to handle individual requests.
The buffet may seem daunting if you aren’t sure what the ingredients are or if utensils are used in multiple items. Don’t be shy to ask the restaurant manager to take you around the buffet, showing you what’s safe. At specialty stations like omelet or pasta, you can ask to have food prepared in a different way (use oil instead of butter, for example). Don’t be shy to ask staff to use gloves or new utensils either.
Shore excursion dining may also be a concern, so it is better to address your needs early. Speak with staff at the shore excursion desk so they can contact tour operators or restaurants ahead of time on your behalf. If you will be exploring on your own, ask the staff if they have a list of options that would suit you, or they can search the internet on your behalf beforehand. Remember that if you are going to bring your own snacks ashore, check with ship and local legislation as some fruits and vegetables may be prohibited.
Finally, do your homework. Not all cruise lines are created equal when it comes to food allergies and restrictions. Most cruise lines’ websites have sections dedicated to their dining options as well as how they accommodate special dietary needs. Another good resource is traveler reviews. Do some digging to see if others have had experience on the cruise line you’re considering. Your travel agent may also be able to help you choose a cruise that will be best suited to meet your needs.
Food allergies and dietary restrictions shouldn’t stop you from enjoying your cruise to the fullest. With advance preparation and a bit of research, you’ll be able to relish all of the gastronomical delights that are truly one of the best aspects of cruising.
