Embark on an expedition cruise to Antarctica to explore the striking shores of the White Continent. Admire unique wildlife and sail through landscapes where icebergs glide alongside. The most exhilarating cruise experiences in the world might be on some of the most remote itineraries.
Expedition cruises to the Antarctic take travellers to extreme climates, typically aboard smaller, specialized vessels. These cruises offer opportunities to explore landscapes seen by few others. In the Antarctic you might encounter a penguin colony, or walk on the rugged Antarctic peninsula. These itineraries are ideal for those seeking adventure along with a connection to the world’s most untouched frontiers.
ANTARCTIC PENINSULA
The Antarctic Peninsula is the most accessible part of Antarctica, where you’ll find active scientific research stations, and most scenic cruises to Antarctica will explore. Embarking from the southernmost tip of South America, the crossing to Antarctica takes two days, and involves crossing the notorious Drake Passage. Expect to see plenty of dramatic scenery on this stretching peninsula including icebergs, seals, whales (depending on the time of year) and lots of penguins—but not King or Emperor in this part of the Antarctic.
SUB-ANTARCTIC ISLANDS
Nearby, the Sub-Antarctic Islands—including South Georgia, The Falklands and the South Shetland Islands—have their own rich ecosystems and historical significance. The rugged and remote South Georgia Island is about 1,200 kilometres (800 miles) to the east of the Falkland Islands, and is renowned for wildlife. South Georgia is home to millions of breeding pairs of Macaroni penguins (the ones with the bright yellow crests), more than 100,000 pairs of King penguins and millions of fur seals, elephant seals, whales and sea birds. The island is also of historical interest for its connection with Sir Ernest Shackleton’s tragically fated Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. The Falklands also have the largest concentration of black-browed albatross in the region, a bird with an elegant, almost regal appearance, easily recognisable by striking markings around the eyes that give it a permanent frown. Both species are unafraid of humans, offering excellent photo opportunities. The Falkland Islands is made up of more than 700 islands with varied coastlines from cliffs to sandy beaches. Some of the islands are habited, and towns like Stanley welcome visitors.
ANTARCTIC CIRCLE
For the truly intrepid traveller, crossing the Antarctic Circle might be the goal. Some expedition cruise itineraries continue their journey southwards, to achieve the all-important latitude of 66°33’ South. Crossing this line is not something many people have done, and the occasion is generally marked with celebration and a toast onboard.
SOUTH AMERICA
Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world—sometimes called the “End of the World”—often serves as a springboard for Antarctic expedition cruises. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, Argentina’s southern coast offers picturesque towns, glaciers, and national parks, making it a haven for nature lovers. Punta Arenas, Chile also serves as an embarkation point for Antarctic expeditions, providing access to the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands. Cruising the Chilean coast offers access to some of the most pristine landscapes in the world, including fjords, glaciers, and wildlife hotspots.
Deception Island, South Shetland Islands
Located in the South Shetland Islands, this active volcanic caldera features geothermal hot springs and dramatic craters that make it a must-see on any polar expedition.
Penguin Encounters, South Georgia Island
As the stars of Antarctic wildlife, you have to take some time to view the penguins, who are often fearless due to few human visitors. Many cruise itineraries time visits to coincide with breeding seasons when you can witness chicks hatching and being fed. South Georgia Island is particularly renowned for its massive King penguin colonies.
Polar Plunge
Not for the faint of heart, but some cruise itineraries will off an opportunity to partake in a polar plunge in these icy waters. Dive in (with safety lines) from the ship’s zodiac for this sensation, that some say has incredible health benefits.
