Get ready for an adventure at the top of the world. A place where raw tundra and stark beauty take on new meaning. A visit to the far north including Canada, Norway’s Svalbard, Iceland, and Greenland is a visit to where nature reigns supreme.
In this icy landscape you’ll have the opportunity to spot an abundance of wildlife including reindeer, walrus, arctic fox, narwhals, beluga whales, muskox, seals—and the king of the arctic—the polar bear. Take time to explore Indigenous cultures, and sites dedicated to the early Arctic explorers. On Arctic itineraries, often fleets of Zodiac will get you to places where dockage doesn’t exist, allowing visits to small villages, tiny inlets and up close viewing of the landscape.
GREENLAND
A frozen wonderland of majestic mountains, icy deserts, untouched tundra, and vast glaciers, Greenland is the world’s largest island. With fewer than 60,000 residents, it’s also the least densely populated land mass on earth. Disko Bay is renowned for its colossal icebergs, many originating from the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Whales, particularly humpback whales, are often spotted in the waters. Nuuk, the capital, offers a blend of city life and traditional Inuit culture, along with access to Greenland’s fjords. Located on the southwest coast, the city is home to one of the world’s largest fjords, the Nuup Kangerlua Fjord, whose waters are brimming with marine life. The waterfront of Nuuk is dotted with brightly coloured houses against the backdrop of Sermitsiaq mountain. Explore museums, art galleries, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.
SVALBARD
Svalbard is the top of the world. A Norwegian archipelago located between the northernmost tip of Norway and the North Pole, Svalbard gleams with jagged peaks, glaciers and rare wildlife. Lucky visitors will spot Svalbard reindeer, Arctic foxes and maybe even a polar bear. During winter, you might spot the Northern Lights and in summer, there is daylight 24 hours a day. Kongsfjorden, or King’s Fjord, takes its name from the three majestic peaks—known as the crowns—that overlook it, symbolizing the kingdoms of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. A nearby glacier feeds the calm waters with drifting icebergs, creating a serene Arctic scene.
HIGH ARCTIC OF CANADA
Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut, often serves as the starting point for expeditions through the Arctic Circle, where visitors can explore the vast, untouched landscapes of Baffin Island and Prince of Wales Island In Canada’s Northwest Passage. Explorers long sailed these treacherous waters in search of the famed Northwest Passage and history buffs will want to explore historic Beechey Island, the final resting place for members of the ill-fated Franklin Expedition. Dundas Harbour was once a remote outpost for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and became a base for various Arctic expeditions, while Cape Hay features dramatic coastal cliffs, sweeping vistas and unique Arctic wildlife. Pond Inlet, on the northern shores of Baffin Island, is home to a small but vibrant Inuit community. Nicknamed the “Jewel of the North,” the surrounding landscape is a mix of glaciers, icebergs and rugged mountains.
Longyearbyen, Svalbard Archipelago, Norway
This is your chance to see polar bears in their natural habitat. Located about halfway between Norway and the North Pole, Longyearbyen is known for its unique coexistence with polar bears, who are frequently encountered in the surrounding areas.
Disko Bay, Greenland
Located on the western coast of Greenland, Disko Bay is known for massive icebergs and a rich Inuit heritage. The bay is home to the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where visitors can view awe-inspiring glaciers.
Kayaking among Icebergs
Explore the icy waters in the millennia-old manner of the Indigenous people of the region. The kayak, invented by the Inuit 4,000 years ago, is the best way to be enchanted by the deafening silence of the north, gliding between ice floes, listening to the cracks of glaciers as they break into the sea.
