Closer to home, but nonetheless spectacularly scenic, cruising along the St. Lawrence River past historic Canadian cities and landmarks toward the coastal charm of Cape Cod is a popular cruise itinerary.

Many luxury cruise lines time these voyages for autumn and peak foliage season (September to October) when the landscapes are painted in brilliant reds, oranges, and golds. Beaches, lighthouses, jagged cliffs and ragged peninsulas, harbours full of sailboats, charmingly whitewashed seaside villages, and hundreds of offshore islands await.

FRENCH CANADA

Embarking from Montreal or Quebec City, these itineraries are a perfect time to spend a few extra days enjoying the joie de vivré of Quebec. Towering over the banks of the Saint-Lawrence River, Quebec City has reams of rich history and beautiful architecture. Explore Old Quebec City’s cobblestone streets, historic Château Frontenac and the fortified city walls.

Montreal wears its French heritage with a healthy dash urban cool. Mount Royal is the jewel of the city, and impressive Notre-Dame Basilica and a diverse set of museums and galleries offer plenty to explore. In the heart of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, the archipelago of Iles-de-la-Madeleine forms part of the province of Quebec. Historically cut off by thick ice, residents developed a distinct culture and character of their own. A flotilla of fishing boats keeps local restaurants serving the freshest lobster, mussels, and crab. The expansive scenery of Fjord-du-Saguenay National Park is what draws most visitors to the region of Quebec. Said to be the Northern Hemisphere’s most southerly fjord—and one of the world’s longest—it’s 270 metres deep in some parts and towered over by steep slopes.

CANADA’S EAST COAST

A rich maritime heritage, charming coastal cities and friendly locals define Canada’s eastern provinces. In Halifax, Nova Scotia, discover Scottish heritage and connections to the tragic story of The Titanic. The city thrives on home-grown music, outdoor events, and fresh seafood. Peggy’s Cove lighthouse is nearby, an iconic symbol of the coast, and one of Canada’s favourites. Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island may be best known for the pigtails of its most famous fictional heroine, Anne of Green Gables, but the city is also home to some of Canada’s oldest history and contemporary cuisine. The Culinary Institute of Canada is located here, peppering the area in cooking talent, while its thriving craft brewing scene keeps the bars hopping.

NEW ENGLAND

A prime slice of New England coastline, Newport, Rhode Island serves up colonial splendour, striking seascapes, and some of the freshest seafood around. The fresh, ocean air of Newport was much sought after during the Gilded Age, as the rich and powerful made their mark, building grand and stately mansions overlooking the waves. Stroll the coast, or take the twists and turns of Newport’s incredible ocean drive, and try seafood in the bustling eateries of repurposed wharves—serving up Rhode Island specials like steamed lobster and clams. Skyscrapers mingle harmoniously with cobbled streets in Boston, Massachusetts, one of the USA’s oldest cities. Lighthouses, lobsters, and long stretches of beach epitomize Portland, Oregon. Known for its lively downtown, a thriving arts scene from crafts to clothing, and innumerable restaurants have put Portland on the map. A Cape Cod Canal Transit is a must for any travel-savvy cruiser. With two fixed bridges over the canal, clearance is a problem for large ships, but a smaller ship journey allows access. The surroundings are something to behold; be on the lookout for Great Blue Heron and Red-tailed Hawk and the endangered North American Right Whale.
