To explore the vibrant west coast of Mexico, cruises typically depart from Californian ports like Los Angeles, San Diego, or San Francisco on itineraries that visit popular destinations along the Baja Peninsula.
Indulge your love of water sports in beautiful Cabo San Lucas, compare local tequilas in Ensenada and search for treasures in Puerto Vallarta’s chic art galleries.
CABO SAN LUCAS
Known for its stunning rock formations, beautiful beaches, and vibrant nightlife, Cabo San Lucas or “Cabo” is one of the premier resort destinations in the western hemisphere. Lying at the very tip of Baja, where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez, this is the spot to swim in the transparent waters, marvel at the wealth of marine life, relax on one of the white-sand beaches or try your hand at some of the finest sport-fishing in the world. Visit the picture-perfect El Arco, an arch that may look familiar thanks to its cameo on postcards and advertisements. Drop by the famed Hotel California and indulge in the local food scene at local restaurants, bars and artisan makers.
PUERTO VALLARTA
Unlike many other resort towns in Mexico, Puerto Vallarta still maintains much of its colonial-era charm. There is a great mix of beaches, cobblestone streets, art galleries, and delicious restaurants. Spend part of your day in port walking along the Malecon, Puerto Vallarta’s beach boardwalk. Shop for regionally crafted goods and meet the locals who created them. Stop for lunch at a nearby restaurant, where you can enjoy delicacies like tamales and pozole with a seafront view.
MAZATLAN
The city of Mazatlan maintains its authentic Mexican character while offering world-class resorts, restaurants, and attractions. The historic centre has been carefully preserved and revitalized, creating a unique atmosphere where colonial architecture meets modern amenities along one of Mexico’s most beautiful coastlines. Mazatlan’s historic centre is bursting with restaurants, cafes, Colonial-era plazas and art galleries. Travel back in time with a visit to the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, admire the Moorish and Gothic architecture, and marvel at statues of famous saints that decorate the church’s exterior. Inside you’ll find baroque decor, crystal chandeliers and gold-lined murals.
ENSENADA
Ensenada is Baja California’s third-largest city and one of its commercial and cultural hubs. The climate here is often compared to the Mediterranean, and similar crops are grown here, including asparagus, olives and grapes. Ensenada is the gateway to Baja’s wine route (Ruta del Vino), where labels little known outside of Mexico are produced, often in small batches. Winery tours and tastings are a quintessential Ensenada experience.
Whale Watching, Ensenada
The gray whale migration is one of nature’s most phenomenal events. These gentle giants can be spotted up-close in the heart of their breeding grounds near Ensenada. The region is famous for its ‘friendly’ gray whales, which actively seek human interaction. The peak of the whale season in Ensenada is January and February.
The Arch at Land’s End, Cabo San Lucas
Take a boat tour to the world-famous Arch of Los Cabos to see this iconic natural rock formation where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. A boat tour with opportunities for snorkelling, or a sunset cruise with cocktails are popular ways to reach this spectacular landmark that’s become synonymous with Cabo.
The Malecón, Mazatlan
Mazatlán’s Malecon is one of the longest promenades in the world, offering stunning ocean views, access to beaches, and opportunities for walking, biking and relaxation. This seven-kilometre oceanfront seawall runs the length of the main bay in Mazatlán, along the Avenida del Mar and around a point to the old town.
