The Acropolis
This ancient city is home to some of the most beautiful architecture in the world. The Acropolis alone is a work of art, but it also contains many other temples and buildings that have survived more than two thousand years of history.
Sitting on a limestone hill that rises above the city of Athens, Greece. It has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The combination of modern, ancient, and contemporary architecture make it a sight to behold.
The Brief History of the Acropolis
The Acropolis was built in the 4th Century BC as a temple to Athena. In the centre of this ancient structure sits an incredible marble temple that is considered by many people to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The Acropolis is also where you can find the Parthenon, which was built in 447 BC by Pericles (the ruler at the time) which was built in honour of Athena, goddess of war and wisdom.
When Alexander the Great conquered Greece he added to these temples by building his own temple to Athena Nike in 332 BC which still stands today as well as a temple dedicated to Olympian Zeus which was built around 100 BC but destroyed by Christians in 6th century AD.
This building has been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times over its history due to earthquakes and fires. This place has since served as a temple for a myriad of religions and cultures for over two thousand years. Today it stands as a symbol for democracy and freedom throughout Greece as well as around the world. It has been protected by law since 1865 when King George I declared it National Landmark Site status so that no one can ever destroy it again. The Acropolis has since been converted into a museum which you can visit on your trip through Greece.
In addition to the Parthenon, there are many other sites that make up the Acropolis. These include the Erechtheion or Temple of Athena Polias (a temple dedicated to Athena), Propylaia (gateways) which acted as a symbolic separation between the secular and religious parts of the city. Visit the Temple of Athena Nike (the god of Victory), and the Theatre of Dionysus. All of which are in close proximity to each other around the Acropolis.
